The pitchers' defensive skills along with his ability to pitch become an important factor that cannot be over looked. After he releases the ball he automatically becomes an infielder. Always, having to be prepared to be in a position to field a bunt, cover home plate on a passed ball. He must also be prepared to back up the bases on certain infield plays.

Fielding Bunts:
1.The pitcher charges the ball and prepares to field it with his bare hand if
   possible. .
2.Throw directly to the base by spinning in line with it and throwing from
   the upright position.

Covering First Base:
1.On all ground balls hit to the right side of the infield the pitcher breaks
towards first base, assuming he must cover the base, unless called off by the
    first baseman.

Backing Up Third Base And Homeplate:
1.With runners on base the pitcher backs up either third base or homeplate,
depending on where the play will be, on ball hit to the outfield.
