UNIVERSITY GAMES CROSS COUNTRY SKI TEAM ANNOUNCED

(Jan.16, 2001) - The two coaches and 13 athletes who will represent Canada next February in Poland at the Winter World University Games in the cross country events were announced this past week.

Garry Gibson of British Columbia, Pattie Kitler of Ontario, and Morten Asfeldt of Alberta will coach the 13-person (six women, seven men) Canadian cross-country contingent.

The World University Championships will be held February 7-17, 2001 in Zakopane Poland. The Games, held every two years, include a multitude of sports including the cross-country events. Canadas best finish in the cross-country event, 41st, occurred at the 1999 Winter Universiade held in Slovakia.

The team representing Canada in the cross-country events appears to have a considerable amount of depth. Coach Garry Gibson said, "We have the most depth since our team from 1995".

Traditionally the team has been comprised of student-athletes from one or two institutions. However, Gibson was pleasantly surprised by the makeup of the 2001 Canadian contingent. Team Canada is made up of athletes from a variety of schools from across the country.

Team Canada has a strong focus on improving on their best ever finish (41st). Gibson stated, "We have a wonderful group of student-athletes who will represent Canada with pride and class".
