FASTBALL TIGERS ON A ROLL
Mississauga, On. - MNBA Fastball rep teams continue to make their mark in southern Ontario tournaments.
The Bantam team has won a medal in every tournament entered, including a recent Gold in St. Catharines. A 4-2 win in the final against Windsor earned the Tigers that tournament championship. In Cobourg last week, the same team came home with the Silver medal. The Tigers were forced to forfeit the final against Walkerton when Mississaugas second player was injured. In the sixth inning with a 1-0 score, Tiger Michelle Reinhardt was hit by a pitch, leaving the Mississauga squad with only eight players, causing the forfeit. Team members include Michelle Barrett, Isabelle Diceglie, Karlene Headly-Cooper, Stephanie Hyndman, Christina Mascherin, Shannon Mosdell, Reinhardt, Angela Rushton and Diana Wong. The team is managed by Bill Rushton and coached by Ian Hyndman and Doug Mosdell.
This past weekend, the Novice I Tigers captured Gold at the Bell Classic Tournament in Pickering. Undefeated in five games, the 13-14-year-olds had the best runs-against record in the tournament. After a decisive win against Pickering, the Tigers were in a close defensive game against Orleans when catcher Monica Machado was injured during a play at homeplate. The team showed its spirit by winning the game while their teammate was undergoing surgery to repair her broken hand. Their most challenging game was against the Scarborough Spirit, undefeated in 21 games until the Tigers defense stopped them 3-2. The Gold Medal game against Chinguacousy showed the Tigers strength in a 3-0 shut-out. The pitching crew of Ali Djordevic, Marcie Furtado and Carly Sutherland kept the runs-against average low while the rest of the team, Christine Blonski, Lindsay Borges, Danielle Cerisano, Carolyn Horbaczyk, Monica Machado, Elyse Moore, Melanie Olar, Kendra Saunders and Krystyn Scrbic played tough against strong competition. The team is coached by Grant Sutherland, Pat Barret, John Cerisano and Tony Furtado.
Recently London, the Mite Tigers dominated the field by winning against Guelph and Chatham then losing by one run to Chinguacousy. To make it to the Gold medal round the 9 & 10-year-olds beat a strong Brampton team, only to face them again in the final. This time the Tigers came up short but proudly accepted the Silver. Team members are Sara Bourque, Amy Capabianco, Caitlin Cresswell, Megan Dempsey, Teja Durante, Melanie Furtado, Jamie Latini, Katherine Lucey, Rebecca Moroney, Sara Mullally and Janis Robins. SILVER LINING FOR SQUIRT II TIGERS
When the Mississauga North Fastball League entered its Squirt II team in the prestigious Dorothy Hill London Fastball Tournament, manager/coach Rob Hamilton was hoping for a valuable learning experience and a bonding opportunity for these young, new competitors. He got all that, plus a Silver Medal over the weekend.
The team of 11 and 12 year old girls (almost all in their first year of competitive fastball) ended up first in their division by defeating Whitby 10-6; Waterloo 9-7; Halton Hills 18-3; but losing 13-5 to Stratford. The semi-final game against a strong Chatham team brought out the best in the Tigers, who played their most skilled game of the tournament. Matching runs inning for inning, the Tigers pulled ahead 7-6 in the 6th to win the game. The skilled defense of the Brampton Blazers in the final Gold Medal game, was too much for the Mississauga Tigers, who settled for silver.
Key hits for Mississauga North included home runs by Chantal Desrochers (2) and Chelsea Turner; plus triples by Sabrina diBella (2), Danielle Watling and Turner. Strong pitching by Watling and Kayla MacArthur and solid defense by the entire team, which also includes Jacqueline Hamilton, Lisa Brooks, Vanessa Diceglie, Erika Paulsen, Kimberly Sheppard and Kelsey Trainor, contributed to the victory.
In addition to Hamilton, the team is coached by Norm Paulsen, Al Watling and is assisted by Randy Sheppard and Joanne McClure.
