Posted August 22 1999

The Mississauga North Mite Tigers fastball team represented the MNBA in the tier II Mite Provincial Championships in Ajax over the August 13th to 15th weekend

The team began the tournament on Friday 13th against the St. Catherines Wildcats. The Wildcats with exceptional pitching and timely hitting defeated the Tigers 15-4. The Tigers were not discouraged with this result and resolved to claw their way back to the final, although the route would be long and difficult. Saturday morning and afternoon saw the Tigers show their true stripes discipline, and teamwork. All elements of their game; pitching, fielding, and hitting were exhibited in an excellent display of "Tiger Ball". The Tigers rolled over Stratford 17-4, shut out Kingston 15-0 and closed Saturday with a resounding 19-3 victory over Brampton.

Competition resumed Sunday morning, and the Tiger team picked up where they left off. This team of 9 and 10-year-old cubs defeated the Ajax Raiders 16-1 advancing to the bronze medal game against a strong Chatham team. The Tigers were up to the task and hitting coupled with speed on the base paths proved too much for the Chatham girls yielding a final score of Tigers 17 Chatham 7. Off to the gold medal game, against the St. Catherines Wildcats. The Tigers in their third game of the day and seventh of the tournament faced a rested team of Wildcats. The game lead seesawed through six innings with excellent pitching and fielding from both teams holding the score to 6-6 through 6 innings. The Wildcats pushed a run over the plate in the top of the seventh and then held the Tigers off in the bottom of the seventh to record the 7-6 victory. Mississauga Tigers received the silver medal for their excellent efforts.

The Mite team played in excess of 50 games this season and recorded a win percentage of .682. Team members were 10 year-old second year rep players, Kimberley Brasil, Amanda Cripps, Kirsten Fill, and Trisha Petrosoniak, 10 year-old first year rep players Kayla McArthur and Leisa OBrien, 9 year-old first year rep players Amy Capobianco, Megan Dempsey, Teja Durante, Rebecca Moroney, and Janis Robins.

The coaching staff is to be congratulated for the effort they put forth through the year to improve the individual skills of the players and to build the team spirit that was a key factor in their achievements. Team manager Michael Fill and coaches Gil Brasil, Geri Moroney, and Valerie OBrien were extremely proud of their team and wish all the girls success as they move on to next year.

TIGERS QUALIFY FOR PROVINCIALS (Posted August 17)

MISSISSAUGA, On - The Mississauga North Tigers Bantam II Girls Fastball team came home victorious from the Provincial Qualifiers in Fort Erie, August 6 to 8.

The Tigers came from behind with an over-the-fence two-run home run hit by Julie Robitaille to beat Niagara Falls 4-2. Against Fort Erie, Stephanie Ross pitched a great game, helping the team win 2-0 before losing to the Halton Hill Hawks 6-3. The Tigers kept up their fight driving past Milton 9-1. They met up with Halton Hills again and came from behind once more with eight unanswered runs to win 8-6 in the final inning, thanks to winning RBI triples by Melissa Lane and Tricia Thompson.

Due to the double-knockout rule, the Tigers had to beat the Hawks a second time to take the Gold. They did just that, defeating the Hawks 11-3 for Gold.

The Tigers benefitted from outstanding pitching of both Ross and Lane throughout the weekend. Leanne Strachan called all the games. Other members of the Gold medal team include Nicole Christopoulos, Leslie Bishop, Rachel Paris, Jessie Hogan, Jen Golding, and Ashley Bavington. Mississauga North Tigers girls continue to win fastball tournaments throughout southern Ontario. The Midget team won Gold at Milton, after a good showing in London earlier in June when they brought home a Silver medal.

The team of 17 to 21 year-old girls had to bear down after losing their first game in Milton and took to the field to win the next four games, to earn them the Gold. In the medal game against Elmvale, the Tigers came from behind to win 9-7. Pitchers Leeanne Boreham Ashleigh Stoesser led the strong defense. Catcher Ashley Elliott called a great game and made a key pick-off at second base. The defense held Elmvale off the score sheet after the first inning.
